Costa Rica Luxury Travel Guide: Arenal, Punta Cacique & Papagayo

April 17, 2026

Who This Trip Is For (and Why It Works)

If you want rainforest, adventure, and beach in one trip without a complicated itinerary, Costa Rica is hard to beat. At IMERA Luxury Travel, the combination I recommend most often is Arenal paired with either Punta Cacique or Papagayo. Plan for 7 to 10 days, two completely different landscapes, and no sense of being rushed.

This guide breaks down how to think about each area, where to stay, and how to decide which beach is right for you.

Arenal: Where to Base Your Rainforest Days

Arenal is the anchor for the first half of any Costa Rica itinerary I build. It’s where you get the volcano, the jungle, and the hot springs, and where most clients have their favorite memories of the trip.

Most clients fly into Liberia (LIR), which is the better airport for this itinerary. From LIR, Arenal is about a 2.5 to 3-hour private transfer. It’s a straightforward drive, but the roads get narrow and slow in places, which is exactly why I always recommend a private transfer over a rental car.

Where to Stay in Arenal

Nayara Tented Camp

Elevated luxury tents with private plunge pools fed by natural hot springs and direct volcano views. It’s in the jungle without sacrificing anything. This is the property I recommend most for couples or travelers who want something genuinely special.

The Springs Resort & Spa at Arenal

The best fit for families or anyone who wants everything in one place. Multiple hot springs pools, an adventure center, and expansive views. Kids love it, and parents don’t have to think too hard about logistics.

What to Do in Arenal

Sky Trek Ziplining

A mix of gondola rides, zip lines, and hanging bridges above the canopy. One of the best ways to actually feel the scale of Arenal. It’s not just a zipline; it’s the full picture.

Pure Trek Canyoning

Rappelling down waterfalls in the jungle. This one surprises people. It’s incredibly well-run, genuinely adventurous, and usually lands on the highlight reel.

Mistico Hanging Bridges

Do this with a guide. The difference is not subtle. A good naturalist guide will spot sloths, frogs, and birds you’d walk right past on your own.

Club Rio (at The Springs)

Best for families. River tubing, kayaking, rock climbing, a wildlife sanctuary, and horseback riding, all in one spot.

Where to Eat in Arenal

For a sit-down dinner, Don Rufino and Selva Rustica are both solid. Travesia is worth it if you want something more elevated.

Don’t skip the local sodas. Soda La Hormiga and Soda Viquez are small, casual, and often the best meals of the trip. Genuinely.

Choosing Your Beach: Papagayo or Punta Cacique

Both are in Guanacaste on the Pacific coast. Both are beautiful. They feel completely different.

Here’s how I explain it to clients:

  • Papagayo if you want polished, activity-rich, and easy, especially with kids or a group.
  • Punta Cacique if you want quiet, design-forward, and more tucked away.

Papagayo: Established, Versatile, Easy to Love

Best for: Families, groups, travelers who want options

Papagayo has been the anchor for luxury travel in Guanacaste for years, and the infrastructure shows. Calmer, more swimmable beaches than much of the Pacific coast. A wider range of resorts. Easy access to excursions.

Where to Stay in Papagayo

Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo

The most approachable entry point into luxury here. Modern, relaxed, family-friendly, with multiple pools and a solid activity lineup. I recommend it for shorter stays or as a pairing with Arenal when clients want great value within the luxury tier.

Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo

The most well-rounded property in Papagayo. Consistently high service, beautiful beach, and an Arnold Palmer-designed golf course with ocean views the whole way around. Best for families, multi-generational trips, or clients who just want everything to work perfectly.

Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

The most elevated option here. More private, more architectural, more focused on experience than amenities checklist. I recommend this for luxury couples, milestone trips, or clients where “ultra-refined” is the right word for what they’re after.

How I Match Clients to Properties

  • Andaz: best value, easy, social, great for families
  • Four Seasons: most well-rounded, service-driven, rarely the wrong choice
  • Nekajui: most elevated, private, design-forward, for when the trip itself is the occasion

What to Do in Papagayo

On the Water

Most resorts arrange paddleboarding, kayaking, snorkeling, and jet skiing directly. The water in Papagayo is typically calm, good for beginners and kids. If you want a beach day with some real energy to it, jet skiing here is a great call.

Resort Programming

Don’t underestimate how good the on-property programming is at each of these resorts. Between pools, beach clubs, kids’ clubs, fitness, and curated activities, plenty of clients barely leave the property during the beach portion of the trip, and they don’t feel like they missed anything.

Boat Charters & Sunset Cruises

Catamaran sailing with snorkeling stops and secluded beach access is one of the best Papagayo experiences. Sunset cruises along this coastline consistently deliver. Book through your resort or ask me, because operator quality varies.

Deep Sea Fishing

Half or full-day charters for mahi-mahi, tuna, and sailfish. Seasonal, so confirm timing based on when you’re traveling.

Beach Hopping

Playa Penca, Playa Prieta, and Playa Hermosa are all worth exploring. Easy to arrange through your resort or a private driver.

Golf (Four Seasons)

The Arnold Palmer-designed course at Peninsula Papagayo has ocean views on nearly every hole. Worth it even if you’re a casual golfer.

Spa & Wellness

This is where clients genuinely decompress after Arenal. Every property here does it well. Don’t skip it.

Day Trips (Optional)

Rincon de la Vieja National Park is the most popular add-on, with waterfalls, mud pots, and a different side of Guanacaste. Worth a half-day if you have flexibility in the schedule.

Punta Cacique: Quieter, More Design-Driven

Best for: Couples, wellness-focused travelers, anyone who wants something that feels more exclusive

Punta Cacique is newer and still developing, which is actually part of what makes it special right now. The Waldorf Astoria is the first property to open in what will eventually be a full luxury destination community. The feel is intentional, calm, and cliffside, perched above Playa Penca with views across Culebra Bay.

Where to Stay in Punta Cacique

Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique

Set 300 feet above Playa Penca, this property leans into architecture, wellness, and understated luxury. It’s the first Waldorf Astoria in Central America, and the food program is one of the strongest on the Pacific coast. Six dining venues built around local Guanacaste ingredients. The 17,000-square-foot spa uses native botanicals like volcanic clay and cacao. Best for clients who want to genuinely slow down, with no compromises on quality.

What to Do in Punta Cacique

On the Water

Paddleboarding, snorkeling, and jet skiing right off Playa Penca, plus boat tours for dolphin watching and coastal exploration. The Waldorf also has a surf program through Tropicsurf, with boat access to Witches Rock, one of the better-known breaks on this stretch of coast.

Resort Programming

The Waldorf’s on-property programming is genuinely one of the best reasons to stay here. The coffee experience through the Brunca region is a full bean-to-cup tour led by a Costa Rican Barista Champion. There’s also a tamale-making class with a local chef and chocolate sculpting sessions. These aren’t generic resort activities. Clients who lean into the programming here always leave with something they didn’t expect.

Spa & Wellness

The on-property spa has an open-air yoga deck, guided meditation, and a hydrothermal suite. Clients who come here to decompress don’t tend to leave the property much, and they don’t need to.

Day Trips

The nearby towns of Coco and Playa Hermosa are easy and worth a half-afternoon. Rincon de la Vieja National Park is accessible for a day trip if clients want to add a nature element to the beach portion of the trip.

Logistics Worth Knowing

Use private transfers, not rental cars.

For this itinerary, fly into Liberia (LIR) rather than San Jose. It’s the right airport for both Arenal and the Guanacaste beach destinations, and it cuts your ground time significantly. From LIR, Arenal is about a 2.5 to 3-hour private transfer. Roads can be rough in places, and GPS isn’t always reliable. A private transfer is comfortable, straightforward, and worth every dollar. Around Arenal, local taxis handle shorter trips for about $10 to $15 each way.

Get WhatsApp before you go.

Drivers, guides, and some restaurants coordinate almost entirely through WhatsApp. You’ll need it.

Plan around dry season.

For Guanacaste, the dry season runs December through April. That’s when you get clear skies, calm water, and the best conditions for everything in this guide. Green season (May through November) can be beautiful, especially in Arenal, but expect afternoon rain. September and October are the wettest months. I’ll tell you honestly whether your dates work.

FAQ

What’s the best time of year to visit Costa Rica?

For the Arenal and Guanacaste combination in this guide, December through April is peak season, dry, sunny, and ideal for both rainforest and beach. It’s also the busiest and most expensive window, so book early. If you’re flexible, the shoulder months of November and early December can offer good conditions with fewer crowds.

How long should I spend in Costa Rica?

For the Arenal plus beach combination, I typically plan 7 to 10 days. Less than that and you’re rushing. More and you can add a second beach region or a trip into the Osa Peninsula.

Do I need a rental car?

No, and I generally advise against it. Fly into Liberia (LIR) and use private transfers between regions. It’s more comfortable, less stressful, and the right call for this itinerary. Within Arenal and the Guanacaste resorts, taxis and resort shuttles handle everything else.

Arenal or beach first?

Arenal first, almost always. You’ll be in better shape to relax at the beach after the active part of the trip, not the other way around.

What’s the difference between Punta Cacique and Papagayo?

Punta Cacique is newer, quieter, and more design-forward, currently anchored by the Waldorf Astoria, which is the first luxury property in what will eventually be a full destination community. Papagayo is more established, with more resort options and a wider range of activities. Punta Cacique is the better fit if you want something that feels more private and intentional. Papagayo is the better fit if you want options, a livelier atmosphere, or are traveling with kids.

The Itinerary I Build Most Often

Arenal paired with Papagayo or Punta Cacique is the Costa Rica trip I plan most at IMERA Luxury Travel. You get two completely different experiences without a complicated routing.

The decision between beach destinations usually comes down to one question: do you want quiet and design-forward (Punta Cacique), or polished and activity-rich (Papagayo)? Both deliver. Most clients know which one is theirs once I describe it. If Costa Rica is on your radar, submit an inquiry here and we’ll figure out the right combination for how you travel.
